Holger
Carlsen is a member of the Danish resistance, helping the Allies
against the Nazis, when he is suddenly snatched out of our world
and dropped into a parallel one.
Just as in our world we were at a tipping point with the Nazis
threatening to overtake the world, so in that world the forces of
Chaos are poised to over run the forces of Law. Holger finds himself
a key player in this battle, the Knight of Three Hearts and Three
Lions, though with no memories of why he should carry this significance.
He
has to piece together this and other details of his new world: a
Romantic one based upon the Charlemagne legends, where Morgan Le
Fey lives and elves, giants, trolls and dwarves are real.
There's a bit of a quest complete with brave allies, cunning enemies
and valiant battles.
I'm not normally that keen on fantasy quests, but I liked this
one. That was helped by a distinct lack of peasant boys, some decent
female characters (particularly for the age of the book), the nice
size of the book and how well Anderson has grounded this book in
Northern European mythology.
Holger is well characterised although some of the supporting cast
are a bit thin. That's overcome by Anderson's story telling ability
though.
Gollancz Masterworks series tend to be pretty reliable and this
is another good choice.
