The
title really does sum up the contents of this book which is essentially
selected editorials as written by Stanley Schmidt for Analog magazine
between 1980 to 1998.
Quite what's happened to the past 6 years in regarding more up-to-date
material is debatable although might be waiting for a second volume.
With Analog's poor UK distribution, it's unlikely you'd have seen
much of these things anyway. SF editorials tend towards insight
and gripe when they're allowed to flow.
Although
some topics are typically American with local concerns to environment
and education, others should have you thinking.
Of particular interest are indicators as to what Stanley Schmidt
looks for in submissions to Analog which will inevitably draw sales
of this book.
There are 35 essays divided into 9 sub-sections covering a wide
range of topics but not necessarily all SF related. It's very hard
to choose any particular piece above any other cos they are all
interesting from their individual merits.
This book is really for Zen belly contemplating about the world
and whether you agree with Schmidt or not it should give you pause
for thought.
