This
book presents more history of the colonised world of Pern. In this
case, it is the year leading up to the Second Fall of thread from
Pern's rogue orbit neighbouring planet.
Already the technology that came with the colonisers is falling
apart and ceasing to function leaving the Pern humans problems of
what to replace them with. For those familiar with the events of
the Third Fall, the seeds of development, such as the Harper Hall,
can be seen to evolve from this situation.
We also see the first signs of dissent when Bitra Hold Owner and
generally nasty piece of work, Lord Chalkin, is doing nothing to
prepare his people against thread. Quite the reverse in fact, leaving
it to the Weyr leaders to get some of the older Hold Lords to act
against him.
Into this problem, we have Anne McCaffrey's mix of characters,
some of whom like the apparently incidental portrait artist Iantine,
suddenly have expanded roles.
Although you need to have read more of the other Pern books to
appreciate all the implications of this book, if you've started
from the other historical chronological direction with books like
'Dragonsdawn' and 'First Fall', then you should have no problems
here.
If anything, it's a credit to McCaffrey that she's pulled off a
retroactive history line without missing a beat and once pulled
in, you'll be after the other books to see how things changed.
