In the last century, amongst all the comicbook artists, only a few have been regarded as being truly landmarks from which others have followed. Jack Kirby for his dynamism. Neal Adams for bringing fine art onto the comic page.

Frank Miller, to some extent, for a street-born rougher dynamism. To this, for jaw-dropping material, add Alex Ross who added a photographic quality to the comic page and he’s only just started this century.

Mythology: The DC Comics Art Of Alex Ross with Chip Kid and Geoff SpearI first came across Alex Ross’ art on the 4 part ‘Marvels’ Marvel Comics mini-series and knew that he was something special. Dropping out of the comics field, I kinda missed what he went on to do at DC Comics (although I’m making amends and have now read a copy of ‘Kingdom Come’).

This book encapsulates all the work at DC together with work from Ross’ childhood that doesn’t look out of place amongst any fan-boy’s own developing art skills. If anything, it should act as encouragement that if you persevere then your artwork can improve as well.

As he also admits in the text, Alex Ross is a fan-boy at heart himself and appears to be having great fun with whatever project he turns his hand to. Checking out the detail of any crowd scene, the faces tend to be there for a reason. Judging by the way he likes the Legion Of Super-Heroes but with only two paintings, I hope someone lets him loose on them sometime.

To achieve photo-realism, Ross does use people dressed in costume to get the look he needs but there is also pictures here showing that this isn’t a total dependence. There is also a demonstration of how he works and a Superman/Batman story exclusive to this book.

To say I’m gobsmacked by this book is a severe understatement. There are no empty white pages. Everywhere is art. Don’t forget to look inside the dustcover. The pictures aren’t identical. If you’re only going to be able to buy only one artbook this year, make sure this one is on your list.
