You know how it is. You suddenly realise you’ve missed an interesting author’s recent books because they weren’t released on the UK market. Point in hand is the rather superb ‘The Golden Globe’ by John Varley released 6 years ago Stateside.

The Golden Globe by John Varley.

Kenneth ‘Sparky’ Valentine is an actor and con-artist on the run for murder, hiding out amongst the outer planets and moons under various guises and still performing when he gets the chance. Acting is in his blood and with surgical applications that enable him to switch gender and appearance can play various parts. His travels somewhat intensify when an unstoppable assassin, Isambard Comfort, from the Charonese Mafia, is out to kill him.

Through his travels, we learn a lot about Sparky. His childhood career on TV where he becomes an interplanetary hero to kids, studio politicking and his forceful father.

There is comedy and pathos and some Shakespeare all chucked into this beautifully crafted novel. If you want to learn how to write characters, John Varley is the writer to really read and appreciate.

Set in his ‘Eight Worlds’ reality where the majority of his stories outside of his Gaia Trilogy are placed, there’s no problem reading with that knowledge or having read any of the other books. You get pulled into a Varley novel by the sheer dynamics of the storyline and characters.

John Varley is worth all the plaudits he’s been given over the years. Read it and be hooked, cos he has a new novel out this May.
