This
is the 25th book released by publishers Golden Gryphon and as such they wanted
to do an anthology of authors from their previous books with the latitude to write
what they want to write.
Saying that, I suspect these 20 authors were given
some sort of word count to ensure this wasn't an enormous volume. As such, the
short stories in this volume cover a wide range and stray from SF into straight
drama and comedy as well, so there's plenty of material for everyone and it's
all beautifully written. What has come out of this remit is a very
worthy volume that wouldn't be out of place on a general anthology reader's shelf,
let along one of our own. Highlighting one author above others is likely
to do disservice to others but a quick rollcall here should find a few writers
you might be interested in: James Patrick Kelly, Jeffrey Ford, Michael Bishop,
Kage Baker, Richard A. Lupoff, Kevin J. Anderson, Howard Waldrop, Paul Di Filippo,
Geoffrey A. Landis, George Zebrowski, Ian Watson, Lucius Shepard, Warren Rochelle,
Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Richard Paul Russo, Robert Reed, Andy Duncan, R. Garcia
y Robinson, Neal Barrett Jr and Joe R. Lansdale.
See
what I mean and remember, it's all new material and hasn't appeared elsewhere. Although
I said I'm not that prone to choosing favourites, the one story that stuck more
than most was Kristine Kathryn Rusch's character study piece 'Cowboy Grace'. As
with many of the stories here, if you can step into the reality then it will carry
you through to the end and this one really did it in spades and a real demonstration
of character interplay and it wasn't even SF. If you want to be gob-stopped
by quality writing then pick up this book and for once, be like me, and stuck
for words. GF Willmetts
