The Third Annual Wooden Rocket Awards (aka the Woodies).

The Wooden Rocket Awards are given out every year by the awards sponsor, SFcrowsnest.com, and the Organising Committee of the WRA, to the best online sites operating in the science fiction and fantasy genre, as voted for by the online world's science fiction and fantasy fans.

These awards aim to be true to the founding spirit of freedom of the net - so anyone online can vote in the Wooden Rocket Awards without paying a charge to do so. You don't have to be a fully paid-up member of a genre convention or SFF society; you don't have to pay an 'administration fee' to vote, you don't even have to pay an 'administration fee' to enter a site in the awards. All science fiction and fantasy fans can vote. Once.

2005 was the 3rd annual awards and the winners are listed here. At final count on December 30th 2005, 11,538 verified voters made 61,462 valid nominations for various web sites.

The 2006 awards will open for voting July 2006. Sign up for our monthly newsletter to be notified when the 2006 awards open.

The Year Of The Geek by James Clarke (book review)

I did think when I was shown this book, ‘The Year Of The Geek’ by James Clarke, that it was supposed to be like a diary and you had to read one page a day. It’s not. At least this way, you won’t have to wait until next year for me to finish reading the […]

Jim Shooter Conversations edited by Jason Sacks, Eric Hoffman and Dominick Grace (book review)

I have a lot of respect for Jim Shooter. I was a fan of his ‘Legion Of Super-Heroes’ tales, which he started writing at the age of 13 to give financial support to his family. When he was older, he was employed by Marvel where he became its editor-in-chief mostly by being last man standing. […]
