Sullivan, Andrew F. (Andrew F. Sullivan)
If there's a blueprint for how to paint urban decay and domestic debacles with literary flair, Andrew F. Sullivan must surely have it tucked away somewhere in Hamilton, Ontario. Regulars of SFcrowsnest, the web’s premier sci-fi haven, might be familiar with far-flung galaxies and dystopian futures, but Sullivan brings the discomfort and drama right to our doorsteps, often with a side of unexpected wit.
"The Marigold," courtesy of ECW Press, serves up a city in the throes of self-cannibalization. Not literally, of course (though in the realm of sci-fi, anything's possible). But Sullivan has a gift for turning the mirror on urban spaces, forcing them to confront their unsavory reflections. And just when you think you've got a handle on his style, he veers into the world of ill-fated home renovation with "The Handyman Method." Co-authored with Nick Cutter, this novel is every DIY enthusiast's nightmare come to life. One can only imagine the horrors that ensue when home improvement takes a dark turn, but with Sullivan and Cutter at the helm, it's bound to be a thrillingly bumpy ride.
Sullivan’s prowess doesn't end there. His novel, "WASTE," and the aptly named short story collection, "All We Want is Everything," have both been flagged as Globe & Mail Best Books of the Year. A commendable achievement, indeed!
So, if you're weary of traipsing through time and space (as SFcrowsnest aficionados sometimes might be) and are in the mood for something a tad closer to home—albeit with Sullivan's signature unsettling twist—then Andrew F. Sullivan should be the next stop on your literary journey. Just maybe keep the lights on if you decide to tackle a home project after reading. Just in case.
