If you thought that the apocalypse had been thoroughly milked for its comedic value, "The Suburban Book of the Dead" will make you reconsider. Robert Rankin’s third instalment in the Armageddon series takes the end of days, remakes it, and casts it in a suburban setting. In the middle of all this mayhem, we find our familiar protagonist, Rex Mundi, in the unlikeliest of roles—yep, he's a suburban dad.
It's as if Rankin threw traditional apocalyptic themes into a blender along with suburban cliches and pressed "puree." The result is a concoction that's as bizarre as it is riotous. Rex has to navigate PTA meetings, tending to the garden, and oh yes, averting an impending apocalypse—again. Readers of SFcrowsnest will appreciate the irony that while the setting is suburban, the happenings are anything but ordinary.
